Getting Rich vs. Staying Wealthy – A Key Lesson from The Psychology of Money

Aspire Compass | Edition #03

Hey there,

I hope you're all doing well!

As you know, we're continuing our deep dive into The Psychology of Money, exploring each lesson in detail. Welcome to Day 03, where we discuss an important insight:

★ Staying Wealthy Is Very Different from Getting Wealthy!

Let’s Dive Into Today’s Lesson:

Many people can become wealthy—but staying wealthy is an entirely different challenge.

For example, in the U.S., an average American spends $400 per year on lottery tickets, often hoping for a financial miracle. While a few lucky ones do win, studies show that most lottery winners quickly return to their previous financial state—sometimes even worse off than before.

Why? Because earning money is easy, but growing and sustain wealth is difficult.

The Trap of False Growth

Let’s say you earn ₹100 and invest it in a "safe" option like a Fixed Deposit (FD) offering a guaranteed 4-5% annual return. You might think:

"Wow! A safe and guaranteed return! people investing in stocks are just gambling”

but here’s most people ignore.

Every year , the cost of living living increases by 5% (inflation)

If something costs ₹100 today, it will cost ₹105 next year.

Your FD grows from ₹100 to ₹105, but in reality, you haven’t gained any real value—your purchasing power has remained the same or even slightly decreased.

This means that while your money "grows" safely, it’s actually losing value over time if it doesn’t outpace inflation.

The Key to Staying Wealthy

if you truly want to stay wealthy . you need to invest in assets that;

★ Grow at a higher rate then then inflation (e.g., 10-15% returns over time )

Compound over the years instead of just sitting in a “safe” account

building lasting wealth means thinking long-term. it’s about making smart investment

choices. not just earning money and parking it in low-yield account

Final takeaway

Getting rich is about making money.

Staying wealthy is about discipline, patience, and making smart financial decisions that grow your money over time.

Which one are you working towards?

See you in the next edition!

Best
